Innovative problem solvers and preparing our students for the ever developing world economy. That’s the goal of STEM education and it’s an approach to learning where rigorous academic concepts are coupled with real-world lessons.
It’s a job that challenges many of our teachers in the subjects of science, technology engineering and math.
9 On Your Side is partnering with STEM east to honor these teachers with a cash prize. This month, Lenoir County Schools Coleman Becton is this month’s winner.
Becton is the 7th and 8th grade math teacher at Contentnea-Savannah School in Kinston. An educator for 8 years, Becton says the key to success with her students is getting away from old school teaching from a book and actually finding creative ideas and activities that put together many of their standards that will work together to create a lesson for them.
As part of being honored as Teacher of the Month, Becton will receive $200 that can be used in towards classroom supplies. She says her class will purchase dozens of glue sticks!
Becton is now in the running to compete for STEM Teacher of the Year.
