The 1B4NC recognition service will be held on Monday, April 30, 2007 at Southern Vinyl Manufacturing, LLC. There will be a factory tour starting promptly at 11 a.m. and the presentation will follow at noon. Southern Vinyl is located at 4133 Berkeley Ave. in Kinston.

Southern Vinyl is being awarded for reporting an economic value of at least $2.4 million on a lean project it began with the help of the NC State Industrial Extension Service (IES). The IES is the arm of NC State University that supports North Carolina business in the workplace – in the office or on the factory floor.

Southern Vinyl, which sells PVC fencing and railing to building professionals, began its lean journey three years ago and continues to improve processes. Lean manufacturing is renowned for its focus on reduction of waste in order to improve overall customer value. Lean provides tools that assist in the identification and then steady elimination of waste, the improvement in quality and the reduction of production time and costs.

“Being recognized by the 1B4NC campaign, is so exciting for our company,” said Rod Matthews, managing partner of Southern Vinyl. “It just shows how much we have grown as company over the past three years.”

IES aims to provide services to North Carolina businesses cumulatively worth $1 billion from 2006-2010. So far more than $186 million of value was placed on IES services by the companies who received those services. The IES program was created in 1955 at NC State University’s College of Engineering by an act of the General Assembly. IES is the oldest service of its kind in the nation.
